Careers in Law Costs

Whilst it is not widely publicised qualified law costs draftsmen can easily earn as much as a Legal Executive or Solicitor of the same number of years experience. However, anyone entering this field should be aware that this is a highly specialised and often complex area of law.

Qualifications

The most widely acknowledged qualification in legal costs is attained through the Association of Law Costs Draftsmen (ALCD) and is usually taken as a 3 year correspondence course in conjunction with various practical day courses. The course has recently undergone a significant review. Students may now begin the course twice yearly, in July and in January. New students have to undertake a compulsory induction day before embarking on the written course. Solicitors, barristers, legal executives and students with a law degree may be exempted from the foundation part of the course. It is recommended that you contact the ALCD direct for further details of this qualification as their qualification criteria may have changed since this page was last updated.

Revision

There are revision courses held via the ALCD, usually in September of each year. You are best advised to contact the ALCD for details of specific times and dates.
